Anton Paar SmartPave 93 Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) is designed for precise characterization of asphalt binders across a wide range of temperatures and loading conditions. Dynamic shear rheometers classify asphalt binders based on their resistance to aging, temperature variation, and mechanical forces, making them essential for evaluating polymer-modified and performance-graded (PG) binders used in modern Superpave mix designs.

During DSR testing, a round asphalt binder specimen is confined between parallel plates and subjected to controlled oscillatory shear to determine key dynamic shear properties. With a torque range of 80nNm–160mNm, frequency range of 1x10-7–100Hz, and temperature gradient of ≤0.1°C, SmartPave 93 DSR provides the sensitivity, repeatability, and accuracy required for asphalt binder testing in accordance with ASTM and AASHTO specifications.

SmartPave 93 DSR features a redesigned permanent magnet synchronous EC motor with air bearing support, providing frictionless movement and high-resolution control of torque and displacement. This design enables precise measurement of binder behavior across a wide viscosity range, capturing even small variations in material response.

Temperature control is achieved through a fully automatic temperature calibration system integrated into RheoCompass® software, eliminating user variability and maintaining temperature compliance within 0.1°C throughout testing. Integrated software workflows also guide operators through standardized test procedures, automate data handling, and simplify reporting to support consistent, standards-compliant results.

An advanced Peltier temperature system positions heating and cooling elements above and below the sample. This dual-element design produces near-zero temperature gradients, fast heating and cooling rates, and improved repeatability, all within a completely dry sample environment that avoids the inconsistencies of liquid-cooled systems.

Toolmaster™ technology automatically recognizes installed measuring geometries and temperature devices, removing the need for manual setup and ensuring accurate parameter selection. QuickConnect™ allows one-handed, tool-free attachment of measuring systems. TruRay™ LED illumination provides clear visibility of the sample area for accurate trimming and gap setting, while the instrument’s accessible layout supports efficient daily laboratory operation.

SmartPave 93 DSR operates on 100–230V, 50–60Hz, 16A and is designed for dependable performance in both quality control and research laboratory environments. When equipped with the appropriate accessories, the system supports parallel plate, cone plate, and concentric cylinder measuring geometries.

SmartPave 93 is offered as part of two different systems: HM-90R Anton Paar SmartPave 93 DSR System for QC Testing and HM-91R Anton Paar SmartPave 93 DSR System for Research and QC Testing.

HM-90R Anton Paar SmartPave 93 DSR system for QC testing supports standard testing using 25 and 8mm parallel plate geometries for routine binder grading and quality control testing and includes:

HM-91R Anton Paar SmartPave 93 DSR system for research and QC testing supports expanded testing using 25, 8, and 4mm plate geometries for stiffer binders, aged materials, and low temperatures, along with routine binder grading and quality control testing and includes:

  •          Anton Paar SmartPave 93 DSR
  •          Temperature Device Upper, -50–220°C
  •          Temperature Device Lower, -50–220°C
  •          Air Distributor
  •          Temperature Measuring Set
  •          Circulation Thermostat
  •          Fluid Circulator Connection Kit

This system meets ASTM D7175, D7405; AASHTO T 315, T 316, and T 350.

After selecting your DSR system, choose the appropriate plate kit(s) based on the plate geometries you plan to test. Each kit includes a measuring plate and a screw-on lower plate, available in 25, 8, and 4mm sizes. Silicone Specimen Molds are required to ensure proper placement of the sample between the plates and are sold separately.

HMA-355 Viscosity Standard Fluid, designed specifically for the DSRs, has a 2.7 million centipoise viscosity. Each bottle contains 55mL of fluid and is NIST traceable.
