Mortar is used with the Fritsch Vibratory Micro Mill and contains the sample during grinding. All mortars are rimmed in a shell of shock-resistant aluminum to protect the bowl.
Mortars are available in a variety of materials to adapt the mill to each grinding application. A Grinding Ball and a Mortar are required to operate the Vibratory Micro Mill. Typically, grinding bowls and balls of the same material are used. Note that the mortar material must always be harder than the material to be ground.
FTA-1 is made of agate and is suitable for soft to medium-hard samples.
FTA-2 is made of sintered corundum and is suitable for medium-hard, fibrous samples.
FTA-3 is made of zirconium oxide and is suitable for fibrous, abrasive samples.
FTA-4 is made of hardened stainless steel and is suitable for medium-hard, brittle samples, as well as cryogenic grinding.
FTA-5 is made of hardmetal tungsten carbide and is suitable for hard, abrasive samples, as well as cryogenic grinding.
