Gilson offers ASTM test sieves in all mesh sizes. These sieves meet ASTM E11 and AASHTO M92 requirements for Compliance Test Sieves, and are serial numbered and supplied with certificates of manufacturing conformance. Please note that 6in, 18in, and 10in ASTM Test Sieves are nonreturnable.

Test sieves are available with stainless steel frames and mesh, brass frames and mesh, or combination brass frames with stainless steel mesh. Stainless steel sieves feature the highest quality and longest service life and are often required to reduce specimen contamination. Brass sieves are prone to wear and distortion, and generally more expensive than stainless steel or combination sieves, which have brass frames and stainless steel mesh.

8in (203mm), 12in (305mm), and 3in (76mm) are the most commonly used frame diameters and are stocked and ready to ship in the most popular mesh sizes. Frame diameter sizes of 6in (152mm), 10in (254mm), and 18in (457mm) have slightly longer lead times. Test sieves are manufactured with full height or half-height frames, and many 3in and 12in diameter sieves are available with intermediate height frames. Using half or intermediate-height sieves with finer material sizes allows more sieves in a stack.

The selection of frame diameter and height is based on specimen volume and particle size. A sieve with more surface area processes material much more accurately and efficiently, and also reduces “blinding”, the clogging of mesh openings with particles just slightly too large to pass. Ideally, a sample fraction should cover the surface of a given sieve in no more than a couple of particle thicknesses deep. The height of the frame must be great enough to allow particles to roll, bounce, and reorient to the mesh during agitation. No. 35 stainless steel backing cloth is optionally available to reinforce Test Sieves of any diameter with primary mesh #70 or finer. Backing Cloth extends service life and prevents sagging and tearing of the fine mesh

All ASTM Test Sieves are supplied with a Certificate of Compliance. Users requiring further verification of opening sizes can upgrade to either Inspection or Calibration sieves. The optional verifications are available from all U.S. manufacturers and increase the acceptance confidence level to 99.0% for Inspection, and 99.73% for Calibration.

Master-Matched Services is also an optional upgrade for 8in stainless steel or combination sieves from No. 8 (2.36mm) to No. 325 (45μm). The upgrade guarantees uniformity for multiple sieve sets that are being used at different locations or can be part of a QCQA program.
