Gilson's new SG-5 Aggregate Specific Gravity and Absorption Device quickly and accurately measures specific gravity and absorption of aggregates and a broad range of construction materials. The completely self-contained device uses a proprietary gas displacement measuring system to determine specific gravity and absorption. The system is very easy to use and requires little training; simply place the sample into the chamber and start the computer controlled measurement program. The program prompts for entry of the dry sample weight and for selection of specific gravity, absorption, or both tests. The computer program controls the process and takes a series of measurements on the sample. The results are displayed on the screen, and can be saved to a user defined file for future reference. Individual specific gravity or absorption test results can be determined in as little as 10 minutes. Estimated time for performing a specific gravity and absorption test together is 20 minutes. Current ASTM and AASHTO methods require performing these tests on fine and coarse aggregates separately and mathematically combining the results. The SG-5 can perform the tests on blended aggregates, allowing the operator to test one sample with no additional calculations when computing volumetric mix designs.

The SG-5 also accurately determines Maximum Specific Gravity of Bituminous Mixture at a particular asphalt content (GMM) in about ten minutes. There is no need for complete separation of the sample to measure the GMM, as required in current methods.

The self-contained SG-5 system provides its own source of clean, dry air for operation. No expensive, consumable gas cylinders or compressors are needed. The indicating desiccant for drying the air supply is easily recharged by oven drying, and under normal conditions lasts for several hundred tests. Two different sample holders with bail handles are included. The Large Sample Holder is 6x6.5" (152x165mm) I.D.xH, with approximate volume of 3012ml, and is used for testing coarse aggregates, blended aggregates and GMM samples. The Small Sample Holder, used for fine aggregates and powder testing, is 2x2" (51x51mm) I.D.xH with an approximate volume of 103ml. This holder is also used for automated calibration. A Windows-based laptop computer with preloaded Aggregate Specific Gravity, Absorption and GMM software is included.
