The Los Angeles abrasion test is widely used as an indicator of relative quality of aggregates. Test measures degradation of standard gradings of aggregates when subjected to abrasion and impact, in a rotating steel drum containing an abrasive charge of steel balls. Up to 12 balls are used, depending on gradation of test sample.

Gilson's design features integrated safety features, with total control from outside a sound enclosure. An electrical interlock allows the machine to operate only when the double-hinged lid is closed. Drum is positioned for loading and unloading using a jog button while watching for a colored indicator through a viewing window in the enclosure. Sound is absorbed by the heavy, painted steel enclosure with sound attenuating foam and membrane lining.

The 1/2" (12.7mm) thick welded steel drum has 28" (711mm) ID and 20" (508mm) inside length, and is mounted on a rigid welded steel support frame. The 6" (152mm) wide opening for introducing and discharging sample has a bolted cover which fits flush with inside contour of drum when tightened fast with a dust-tight gasket. A 3.5" (89mm) wide steel shelf of ASTM "preferred design" extends the full length of drum interior and is removable for replacement or maintenance.

A 1-HP motor with speed reducer rotates drum at 30-33 rpm via enclosed chain drive. Slip clutch coupling protects drive during starting, then locks to achieve full-load speed at 100% efficiency without slip. Drum assembly rotates in flanged ball bearings with dust seals and grease fittings. Magnetic motor starter with overload protection has large 22mm JOG and ON/OFF push-button controls, and automatic counter stops rotation after a preset number of revolutions. Abrasive charge of 12 hardened steel balls is included. Heavy-duty catch pan with handle measures 24x26x2.5" (610x660x63mm) and is 18.5 lb (8.4kg) net weight.
